In July, I sent the first issue of the Evessa Journal. It started with a question that kept nagging at me: am I doing enough to support my strength, my bones and my health as I get older?
Seventeen issues and nearly four months later, I thought it would be a good moment to look back at some of the things we've explored and what they've taught me.
We've covered everything from why time can be such an obstacle to what our bones and muscles need as we age. We've also looked at why gyms can feel unwelcoming, how to get started when you're not sure what you're doing, and how to tell whether your efforts are making a difference.
What I've learned:
Small, regular steps add up. One or two strength sessions a week, regular movement and enough rest can go a long way.
The evidence is sometimes less certain than the headlines suggest. That's why I try to share what the research says, and to be clear about where it's less certain.
Starting is often the hardest part. Walking into a new studio a few weeks ago, I had no idea what I was doing, and a kind, encouraging teacher made it so much easier.
The biggest thing I've learned is how much this process is changing the way I think about my own health, and the health of the people around me. I've become more aware of the things I can do now to support my strength, energy and wellbeing as I get older. It's been lovely to share what I'm learning with others, too. It's encouraged me to try new things, pay more attention to how I feel and think about the sort of life I want to enjoy in the years ahead.
The more I explore these topics, the more I realise how much there is to discover. It's also making me think about how Evessa might evolve.
I don't have all the answers yet and I'm reminding myself to stay curious and see where it takes me.
I'm always interested to hear your thoughts, so do get in touch if something comes to mind.
Until next time.
